We celebrate people with Down Syndrome on March 21 or 3/21 because they have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. People with Down Syndrome have extra challenges and are extra special! I have a son with Down Syndrome and we love him to pieces.
As a Christian, I believe people with Down Syndrome are created in the image of God and are worthy of life and love. (Genesis 1:27) In John 9:3 Jesus says that a man was born with a disability so that the works of God might be displayed in him. Having a child with Down Syndrome makes our lives so rich. Learning to slow down, celebrate small milestones, and make space for others are such valuable lessons.
Rock Your Socks
You can celebrate WDSD by inspiring others to see the value of people with Down Syndrome and treat them with kindness. One way people celebrate WDSD is to wear crazy socks. Chromosomes look like socks and having an extra chromosome is what causes Down Syndrome. So, wearing crazy or mismatched socks can start a conversation about embracing our differences!
Share About WDSD With Your Class
Another way to celebrate WDSD is to ask your teacher or your child's teacher if you can share about Down Syndrome with the class. If you have a loved one with Down Syndrome you can talk about them and share pictures. Or you could read a book to the class about Down Syndrome. I created a free coloring sheet that you could pass out to the class.

Here are some picture book recommendations to read to an elementary school class.
These next two sets of social media images can be edited in Canva (free). The images are fully editable so you can change pictures, text, colors, everything.
And finally, I have signs that you can print and hold in a picture to post on social media.
During the month of October we celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month. So that is why you see both advocacy opportunities in the images.
I hope these free resources for World Down Syndrome Day will be helpful to you as you advocate in your sphere of influence.
